Gas Mask Cross Stitch - in progress

This is an in-progress shot of a gas mask cross-stitch I've been working on for some time, and part of the war and fiber series. I've also been taking progress shots of it after every hour or so of working on it, which will be turned into a short animation starting from a blank piece of fabric to the final piece.
A lot of these recent pieces have been concerned with the "war on terror" and the current political situation we're in. I've found that they are a meditative way for me to deal with the chaos that I'm hearing about every day. Listening to the news can be really tough on the psyche, and breaking down these scary images into grids that I can work on piece by piece have a calming effect on me. It's so easy to become overwhelmed by what's happening, and what can you do about it? War seems so ridiculous, and by turning images of war into a pillow or a rug, hopefully makes that point. The tactile nature of fabric and thread have so many comforting associations for me, and while I find some of these pieces kind of funny, it's also therapeutic.
